A Picnic but No Pool

I’ve had birdbath in the yard for a number of years.  It’s fascinating to watch how the birds behave around the pool.   Some jump right in, splash and play.  Some of them dance around the rim before jumping in.  Either they are trying to decide on the perfect spot to land, or they are talking themselves into taking the plunge.   Others won’t get in if there is another bird around.  They want the pool all to themselves.

Sadly, I’ve had to empty the birdbath this year.  There is a disease going around among birds that is making them sick and causing death.  They don’t know what it is yet.  The state of Virginia is asking people to take their bird feeders down, drain their birdbaths and sanitize everything to prevent the spread of this disease.

I’m unhappy that the birds won’t have a pool this year.

But there is still activity around the birdbath.  We have tall purple coneflowers planted around the birdbath that the bees and butterflies love.  They sit on top of one of the juicy centers having a leisurely meal before moving on, sampling as many flowers as they can. I wonder if each flower tastes a little different to them, some sweeter than others or more savory.  Maybe it’s like French fries.  They all taste the same, but who can stop at just one!

On Facebook, I talk about nature, poetry, and the life of a writer.
I’d love for you to follow me there!

Lynn H. Wyvill grew up in Washington DC where her favorite activity was sitting under a Japanese red maple tree, watching clouds create pictures in the sky. As a writer, she finds peace and inspiration when hiking in the woods, strolling on sandy beaches, and observing nature’s show in her backyard. Those experiences are captured in her first book, Nature’s Quiet Wisdom. Before writing books, Lynn worked as a radio/TV reporter and writer for the US Department of Agriculture and owned a consulting business that trained professionals on the creation and delivery of effective presentations. She is a lifelong learner, avid reader, small town explorer, and dedicated theater attendee who lives in beautiful Virginia with her husband.
