A Cool Welcome

I love the juicy bright colors of summer.  Deep golds, spicy oranges, rosy pinks, deep purples, and happy yellows all heaped up in flower beds.  The butterflies and birds come to visit and feast on their sweetness.

Friends like to visit and walk from flower bed to flower bed, anxious to see what’s there but slowing down to enjoy what they find.   What is planted here and there and over there?

My husband and I like to tour our gardens each day marveling at what has grown and by how much. We note what needs more water, what needs less, what needs to be deadheaded and what has done so well, we’ll plant it again next year.

As much as I love these flowers, there is another place that is very special to me.  I have a fern and two white impatiens resting by the front door.  It is always shady here no matter how much sun floods the porch.  I have always loved the combination of deep green and crisp white.  In winter, it is a warm embrace and shelter from the cold.  In summer, the green and white is a cooling breeze that floats around me.

The lush fern and white flowers against the stone wall and floor say “welcome home” to me and “please come in” to visitors.  It’s an invitation to unwind every tense muscle, shed all concerns, and relax in the cool oasis just inside the front door that is under the protection of the guardian angel.

On Facebook, I talk about nature, poetry, and the life of a writer.
I’d love for you to follow me there!

Lynn H. Wyvill grew up in Washington DC where her favorite activity was sitting under a Japanese red maple tree, watching clouds create pictures in the sky. As a writer, she finds peace and inspiration when hiking in the woods, strolling on sandy beaches, and observing nature’s show in her backyard. Those experiences are captured in her first book, Nature’s Quiet Wisdom. Before writing books, Lynn worked as a radio/TV reporter and writer for the US Department of Agriculture and owned a consulting business that trained professionals on the creation and delivery of effective presentations. She is a lifelong learner, avid reader, small town explorer, and dedicated theater attendee who lives in beautiful Virginia with her husband.
