Bountiful Flowers

Summer is here and it is hot, hot, hot and humid.  We’ve watered and had rain, so overall, the garden is doing very well.

This picture is of an expanded flower bed this year.  I thought we had planted everything too far apart.  I was wrong!   So far, this bed is our star attraction.

The African Daisy and some mini carnation-like flowers that are in pots aren’t doing well.  But the dahlias are fighters.  They haven’t given up and neither have I.

The surprise has been the sunpatiens, which got hit by frost, and we thought they were done. We moved them to a new spot, and they are blooming their heads off.  We added a curry plant this year which is beautiful and growing bushy.  The cilantro, which we’ve never had good luck with when it gets really hot, is still going strong.

I’m very proud that I’ve managed to keep the fern alive, along with the hostas, caladiums and coleus.

My first year gardening is more satisfying and fun than I expected.  I’m already planning for next year.  We're (actually, I’m) talking about expanding another flower bed next year.  I need to look at more gardening magazines for ideas, but my husband has begged the next door neighbor not to send any more over!  She’s the one who started all this for me.  But I know he’s teasing me!  I told him I want to dig up most of the back yard for flower gardens.  He hopes I’m teasing him!

On Facebook, I talk about nature, poetry, and the life of a writer.
I’d love for you to follow me there!

Lynn H. Wyvill grew up in Washington DC where her favorite activity was sitting under a Japanese red maple tree, watching clouds create pictures in the sky. As a writer, she finds peace and inspiration when hiking in the woods, strolling on sandy beaches, and observing nature’s show in her backyard. Those experiences are captured in her first book, Nature’s Quiet Wisdom. Before writing books, Lynn worked as a radio/TV reporter and writer for the US Department of Agriculture and owned a consulting business that trained professionals on the creation and delivery of effective presentations. She is a lifelong learner, avid reader, small town explorer, and dedicated theater attendee who lives in beautiful Virginia with her husband.
