My Back Porch Beach

I love the beach.  The constant motion of the waves, salt air, seagulls gliding on air currents, clouds lazily drifting in the sky, makes every tight muscle unwind.  I haven’t been to the beach in well over a year.  But my porch is a very fine substitute.

My husband painted the picture of the beach so I can imagine my feet buried in the sand, the cool water rushing over feet as I stoop to examine shells and the hot sun boring into my skin.

We bought the table at an auction where artists had taken old furniture and made them into works of art.  Seashells and blue marbles mimic the sea and the soft yellow paint, the sunshine.

The green swordfish vase belonged to my mother.  She bought it at the dime store (that tells you how old it is!) shortly after she got married.  It was usually on display somewhere in the house, finally ending up on the bathroom vanity with guest towels arranged in it like flowers. I could never decide if this vase was ugly or cool. I’ll call it “coolugly” and it still fascinates me.

The Adirondack chairs are perfect for relaxing, reading, dozing and daydreaming.

The clouds float across the sky carrying my thoughts, encouraging them to meander here and there with no particular destination in mind.  It is, after all, the journey and not the destination.

The marigolds, petunias and the rest of the garden keep me company, always changing like the ocean’s waves. Birds, butterflies and bees sip their nectar and nibble on sunflower seeds as I cool off with iced tea.

The only thing missing is the hypnotic coming and going of waves.  Maybe if I hold a seashell to my ear, I’ll be able to hear them.

On Facebook, I talk about nature, poetry, and the life of a writer.
I’d love for you to follow me there!

Lynn H. Wyvill grew up in Washington DC where her favorite activity was sitting under a Japanese red maple tree, watching clouds create pictures in the sky. As a writer, she finds peace and inspiration when hiking in the woods, strolling on sandy beaches, and observing nature’s show in her backyard. Those experiences are captured in her first book, Nature’s Quiet Wisdom. Before writing books, Lynn worked as a radio/TV reporter and writer for the US Department of Agriculture and owned a consulting business that trained professionals on the creation and delivery of effective presentations. She is a lifelong learner, avid reader, small town explorer, and dedicated theater attendee who lives in beautiful Virginia with her husband.
