Funny Friend

This is from my book, Nature’s Quiet Wisdom.

Funny Friend

Trees welcome autumn, turning green leaves gold, crimson, and copper. Out of the hundreds, a leaf - bright as a lemon and shaped like a hand - catches my eye. On it, Mother Nature has drawn a face with two playful ebony eyes.

Each time I pass the kitchen window, my new leaf friend waves at me with an enthusiastic, cheerful up and down, up and down.

“Hello, hello,” I imagine it saying. ““I’m so glad to see you.” When the breeze blows, the leaf makes funny faces at me, and I laugh aloud.

The rest of the leaves sway in the cool, crisp air, but their dance doesn’t last long. They take just a few twirls before they fall to the ground.

Just as I’m marveling that my yellow leaf is still with me, a stiff breeze plucks it from its home and sends it tumbling. In the snap of the fingers, it’s gone. Gone! I have lost my sunny, funny friend.

Now cool, damp air creeps in where my yellow leaf had been just seconds ago. I stare at the vacant space and wonder if anyone besides me noticed this happy gold leaf while it lived.

Lynn H. Wyvill grew up in Washington DC where her favorite activity was sitting under a Japanese red maple tree, watching clouds create pictures in the sky. As a writer, she finds peace and inspiration when hiking in the woods, strolling on sandy beaches, and observing nature’s show in her backyard. Those experiences are captured in her first book, Nature’s Quiet Wisdom. Before writing books, Lynn worked as a radio/TV reporter and writer for the US Department of Agriculture and owned a consulting business that trained professionals on the creation and delivery of effective presentations. She is a lifelong learner, avid reader, small town explorer, and dedicated theater attendee who lives in beautiful Virginia with her husband.
