A New Year

The beginning of a new year for me always starts in September.  It’s a holdover from school days. My favorite part of the new school year was the new pencils and tablets.  I loved the feel in my hands newly sharpened pencils that did not yet bear the teeth marks that would appear later as I took my stress out on them.  The erasers were not yet worn down.  The tablets were pristine, each page crisp, no wrinkles or splotches from too much erasing.

It would make a great story to say I loved writing then, but I didn’t.  Writing was painful.  The assigned topics were usually awful, as was the instruction, and my essays were dreadful.

I always had so much hope in September.  I thought every year would be different from the previous one.   I’d do better; I’d be better; everything would be better.

Autumn is my favorite time of year. I love the gold, crimson and fiery orange leaves.  The fragrance of the earth and damp leaves is something I look forward to.  There’s nothing as luscious as the first bites of fresh apples and thick squash soup.  I like it when the warmth of wood fires envelope me and leave their scent lingering on my sweater.  I always feel such peace outdoors in autumn.

I still have hope every September.  This year will be different from the previous one.  I’ll do better, be better. Everything will be better.  It’s autumn’s promise.

Some exciting news soon!

On Facebook, I talk about nature, poetry, and the life of a writer.
I’d love for you to follow me there!

Lynn H. Wyvill grew up in Washington DC where her favorite activity was sitting under a Japanese red maple tree, watching clouds create pictures in the sky. As a writer, she finds peace and inspiration when hiking in the woods, strolling on sandy beaches, and observing nature’s show in her backyard. Those experiences are captured in her first book, Nature’s Quiet Wisdom. Before writing books, Lynn worked as a radio/TV reporter and writer for the US Department of Agriculture and owned a consulting business that trained professionals on the creation and delivery of effective presentations. She is a lifelong learner, avid reader, small town explorer, and dedicated theater attendee who lives in beautiful Virginia with her husband.
